Final Fantasy 13 demo released

Well the Final Fantasy 13 demo was released in Japan this week, and surprisingly Japan is still standing. I guess the country is waiting to implode until the full release. Hmmm, maybe the whole 2012 debacle will because of FF13? Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants? Anyways the FF13 demo is a whopping 5 GB, which makes me wonder how big the final game will be.

The demo is only about an hour long. Also, what the hell will Square do for the Xbox 360 version? They've already said they won't make the 360 port until the PS3 version is done in Japan. Boy will they be in for a big surprise when they find out how big a DVD is. As I've said before I'm not an RPG fan at all but I must admit FF13 looks amazing. The game will apparently be released in Japan at the end of this year. I'm still claiming there's no chance the game will be released outside of Japan before Christmas 2010.

Q1 2009 gaming report – PS3 & Xbox 360

Another three months in the books, another quarter passed. Q1 2009 has come and gone and there were some excellent games released. While we cannot talk about every game we will take a look at top games and even a few games of interest for each system.

Multi-platform – Two must-have titles highlight a solid multi system lineup. Street Fighter moves back into the fighting game limelight while Resident Evil keeps getting batter.

Resident Evil 5 – Heading to Africa for more virus busting adventures. The story and game play should not be missed by any gamer, rock solid, cheesy at times, but rock solid.

Street Fighter IV – Oozing style, SFIV goes back to what works with solid fighting game action that is still 2D based. New characters add to the roster of mostly original characters.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin – Besides the head bobbing this first-person shooter mixes the action of a military based FPS with the paranormal action seen in a twisted Japanese feature film.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection – Phantasy Star 1-4, original Sonic’s, Golden Axe and so much more. Perfect, just perfect collection.

Guitar Hero: Metallica – Metallica … it’s Metallica and Guitar Hero, this is why the franchise was created.

Afro Samurai – While there are issues to be worked out with the camera what Afro does is shows how collaboration across industries can work perfectly.

Honorable Mention – Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Wheelman, Tom Clancy's HAWX, Skate 2, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest

Playstation 3 – The meat of PS3’s lineup is in the list above but one title alone made this an outstanding time to be a PS3 owner.

Killzone 2 – This is the Halo equalizer (not killer). Killzone can stand on its own and when combined with Resistance 2 shows that the PS3 can put out shooter to step up and be taken serious.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 – Bears mention as expansions and updates from the PC and 360 versions are included.

MLB 09: The Show – The best baseball title this season is only on the PS3.

Xbox 360 – Halo Wars, nuff said. Like the PS3 not too many exclusives in Q1 but still some great gaming to be had.

Halo Wars – Forget the fact this game sports more story outside of Master Chief’s exploits with graphics and FMV sequences that are scary good. This is the first, very solid real-time strategy game to really work on a console. Commands and game play flow smooth, just an excellent game.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope – The beginning and end of Star Ocean. Beautiful is an understatement to this space soap opera. With a few misses in the books Square Enix nails it with this 360 exclusive.

Overall Grades – Weak quarter for exclusives, not surprising as most first party juice hits in the holiday season, but gamers can’t argue with the cross-platform titles or Killzone 2 and Halo Wars. Sadly it’s mid-grade overall, C’s, for the quarter as a few great games cannot support all the average to bad (looking at you X-Blades and Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad) games.
Next up a look at Nintendo Wii and DS followed by PS2, PSP and a few PC titles.

Q1 2009 gaming report – Wii & DS

Having covered the PS3 and Xbox 360 it’s now time to take a look at the Nintendo Wii and DS. The games for these systems are unique, which can be both good and bad. Unique controls and touch screen interface allow for innovation but sometimes the dated graphics can be a hindrance. The more casual approach has also flooded store shelves with games that are … less than desirable. That being said below are games that the more traditional gamer (not casual) will enjoy. Some niche, others long running franchises, let’s take a look.
Nintendo Wii – One very original, third-party (surprise) title highlights a quarter filled with familiar names. The Wii is put to good use with these titles but sadly there are a few titles with high hopes that just fall short.

MadWorld – Stylish and violent. There is something very Sin City about this the design and this over-the-top competition where the blood flows freely should not be missed by any mature gamer. Great voice work too btw.

Deadly Creatures – Who knew a game staring a very realistic spider and scorpion and two rednecks could be so witty. Sure to go down as a hidden gem.

Rune Factory Frontier – Harvest and build relationships, it works and the Wii is the perfect location for a game like this.

The House of the Dead: Overkill & Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop – Two titles with tons of the undead from two publishers. Fans of Resident Evil can’t go wrong with some exaggerated zombie killing fit for the grind house.

Dis-honorable Mention – These familiar titles miss the mark. Sonic is all over the place recently and Tenchu is better on PSP. Final Fantasy … it’s the same game as on the DS. Sonic and the Black Knight, Tenchu: Shadow Assassins, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time

Nintendo DS - 10+ titles deep on the really good gaming scale for the DS. Most are of the RPG variety and there seems be to a strong industry move to strategy/tactical role-playing games for new and established franchises. No complaint here, but this scan be very niche.

Pokémon Platinum – Essentially Diamond/Peral with new content and Pokémon. The formula is not new, but works so well. If you’ve never dug Pokémon, Platinum will not change your mind, but for fans it really is a must have just like Emerald was.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars – More old-school GTA then new but updated with new storyline. Good for GTA fans, others it’s a mixed bag, again if you like the franchise check it out.

Lux-Pain – A stylus mystery with all the style of Persona. Packed in art book just adds to an excellent game CSI fans will dig … with an anime design (actually, more X-Files in mystery).

Suikoden Tierkreis – As good as it ever was. One of the best looking DS titles with lush backgrounds and its one great role-playing game.

TrackMania DS – A PC title that works beyond any hope on the DS. Design and share tracks, race and just enjoy. Racing fans, this is a must have as it’s fun and original, hard to say on a flooded DS market.

Avalon Code – On the list for one aspect alone, re-writing the book of chaos … it was chaos right? The graphics are not that great but it’s an original title that is very enjoyable.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon – The original proves that game play is the name of the game. Not as pretty as pretty much every title on the list but the story and game play shine through and shows how all games of this type should be built. (Except losing allies for good when they die.)

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride – How did it take this long for the Dragon Quest series to get proper release in the states? By far Hand of the Heavenly Bride is the best yet on the DS and its use of both screens to show more map and game play is excellent.

Blue Dragon Plus – Just like its 360 big brother Plus is a very kid friendly title. It picks up where the game left off and offers a hybrid strategy/action role-playing format that works best when all characters just bum rush one opponent at a time, not too many tactics needed.

Honorable Mention – Kid friendly, simple but enjoyable, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time. Good on the DS, but the same game Wii. Why not bundle these together? Legacy of Y’s: Books I & II, another remake but does not hold up as well as DQ. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume … long title for a game that comes up just a bit short.

Overall Grades – The Wii gets a C- as there are just not that many good, not even great, just good games coming out while the DS gets a solid B. Quite a few memorable gaming experiences on the DS but too many of them are role-playing variety which will turn off most DS’ers. With the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the books along with Wii and DS all that’s left is a look at PS2, PSP and a few PC titles.

Q1 2009 gaming report – PS2, PSP & PC

The third and final installment of a look at the best games in Q1 2009. Covered so far, Xbox 360 and PS3 then Wii and DS and to wrap it up lets look at PSP, PS2 and a few PC titles. While the PS2 is far from dead it is getting last rites while the PSP works to prove its relevance. There is hope for the PSP with some solid titles hitting shelves in addition to all the cross platform, scaled down titles out there, sports titles, etc. PC, this space has never been about PC titles but there area always a few worth a mention. Let’s get started in order to finish.

PlayStation Portable (PSP) – Connectivity; that is the bright spot for PSP this quarter. Resistance: Retribution allows for story building, story filling but it also syncs with PS3 for unlockable content (more on that in Retribution Impression later). There is no reason for titles like Prinny not to hook up for additional content. Just an idea, but one that should be mandatory for games ported to the PSP from PS3 big brother.

Resistance: Retribution – Auto-aim can feel a bit cheap but turn it off for a more challenging experience and great look at the story between PS3’s part 1 and 2. Great PSP title that controls really well.

Mana Khemia: Student Alliance – It’s more PS2 than PSP but this is not a bad thing when it comes to niche RPG titles like Mana Khemia. Role-playing fans need apply.

Phantasy Star Portable – Phantasy Star Online never got the pub it deserved so this title will be missed by many, but like Monster Hunter before it, US gamers need to ignore the sales charts in the states and give this puppy a spin.

Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? – Great old-school gaming action with the humor and characters of Disgaea and it’s not a 100+ hour stat fest; this is one great and fun game, period.

LocoRoco 2 – More of the same, stylish, fun game play as the first LocoRoco but really, did this slip under anyone else’s radar?

Star Ocean: Second Evolution – Much better than the first SO PSP title, this shows off some fun game play and a deep and engaging story. Fantasy worlds are all the rage, always have been for role-playing epics, but Star Ocean is the exception with a galaxy spanning, system spanning adventure.

PlayStation 2 – Saying the PS2 is on life-support is being kind. Yes it’s almost totally obsolete from a new game standpoint but these titles, especially Naruto, bear watching.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 4 – The first, and only (right now), Shippuden based Naruto which is a big deal. The graphics may be a bit dated but the game play is some of the best out there for an anime based fighter with story aspects … only the only one out there right now that is new.

Tomb Raider: Underworld – Lara still offers up a great gaming experience. Not a nice looking at next-gen (duh) but still a fun romp.

Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica – Just like Mana Khemia on PSP this is old-school Japanese RPG action at it’s best and most beautiful. Bonus content abounds.

PC – Two PC titles are ports from next-gen consoles, how did they fare? The other three are real-time role-playing games that work way better on PC than any console and really need to be played.

The Last Remnant – Can the PC version be better than the pitiful 360 release … pray, just pray.

World in Conflict: Complete Edition– Collections of this quality are excellent and make waiting worth if for non-PC gamers who want to PC game once in a blue moon.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Uprising – C&C expansion pack, always delicious and cheesy.
World in Conflict: Soviet Assault – More World in Conflict, it’s really a well built game with a story that will send gamers to watch Red Dawn … gamers remember Red Dawn right?

Mirror's Edge – Looking for Faith to have a better adventure on PC with better first-person controls. Console was great, PC just as good.

Overall grades – PlayStation 2 gets a special education B since its fading fast and all games of quality are just gravy. PSP digs in with a hard earned C thanks to Retribution and Prinny, but the lack of games keeps PSP down, not even good games, just games. Grading on a curve with these systems as what was expected was delivered, not enough on PSP. PC games don’t get graded, just mentioned. With that a close to Q1 2009, see you for Q2 round-up in July.

New iPhone 3.0 Beta Software Brings More Improvements

New iPhone 3.0 Beta Software Brings More Improvements
Daniel Ionescu
Apr 16, 2009 12:17 am

Apple released last night a third beta build of the iPhone 3.0 software, taking developers one step closer to the final release in June. Arriving exactly two weeks after the previous build, the iPhone 3.0 third beta software build brings speed improvements and plenty of under-the-hood goodies.

One of the most significant additions to the latest beta of the iPhone 3.0 software is the way individual apps will be able to notify users of updates or additional content. At the moment, individual apps flag users only in iTunes of new events, but with the 3.0 build, they will be able to do so right on the phone via badge, text or sound notifications.

Developers are also reporting further improvements in the latest beta carrying the 7A280f build number: Spotlight (phone-wide search) will now let users save the last search they made, and can set restrictions for inside-application purchases and location data.

An interesting fact about the third beta of the iPhone 3.0 software is that the Skype app no longer works on 3G. With previous builds, Skype allowed 3.0 beta software users to place calls via 3G, unlike the same app on the current 2.2 platform, which can make calls only over Wi-Fi. Apple seems to have fixed this "bug," so no more wishful thinking for cheap VoIP in the 3.0 final release.

This third beta of the iPhone 3.0 software indicates the imminent arrival of a final 3.0 software in June, just like Apple promised. However, the question remains whether we will get some new iPhone hardware as well, especially as rumors intensified over the last weeks, detailing hardware components and features.

Sweaty workouts killing iPhones?

Some iPhone owners are claiming that exercise, while good for you, may break your Apple device. Of course, as with most electronic devices, significant moisture can ruin Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPod. But now, some are saying that water damage may occur during activities as mundane as going for a jog.

This past Monday, KPRC Channel 2 in Houston ran a story during its Ask Amy consumer segment titled Ask Amy: iPhones Sweat Sensitive. (The video segment can be seen here.) In the segment, investigative reporter Amy Davis pursued consumer complaints about iPhones being damaged by sweat. According to Amy's report:

Our cell phones take a pretty good beating. We drop them. Your kids may use yours as a teether. But the Apple customers we spoke with said all they did was take their new phones to the gym.

"I never would've bought a phone if I knew it would ruin the first time I got it out at the gym," Stacie Keneker said.

"They sell all these accessories that you are supposed to be able to use at the gym to make it convenient," Lee Pittman complained.

But "convenient" is the last word Pittman and Keneker said they'd use to describe their iPhone experience.

"I would like a phone that works," Keneker said, holding up her iPhone that constantly resets itself.

"This phone is worthless to me now. It's useless," said Pittman, whose iPhone will no longer let him make calls.

When their iPhones stopped working properly, both said Apple employees told them a moisture sensor on their devices had been tripped.

"It happens all the time," said Pittman, repeating what he said an Apple employee at the Willowbrook, Texas, store told him. "He said they have this issue all the time."

What happens? Apparently sweat happens.

Both Keneker and Pittman use their iPhones at the gym to listen to music or use the calorie-counting fitness applications that actually come with the phone. They said Apple employees told them their sweaty palms are the likely culprit here.

"If this was going to be sensitive enough where you can't use it at the gym, why don't they have a cover there?" asked Pittman, pointing to the opening where the charger plugs into the iPhone.

According to Amy, all calls to Apple public relations were not returned as of press time. Amy asked Apple about whether or not they would make design changes or issue warning to consumers about this problem and according to her, "They didn't answer that question". She was, however, directed to a 28-page product information guide that did little to resolve the issues for consumers she had received complaints from. So far none of these consumers has gotten any relief from Apple.

I discussed the consumer complaints with Amy and decided that the iPhone failure in one case was probably an honest accident--the user apparently has sweaty hands and tripped the sensor on the bottom of the iPhone 3G. It is hard to believe that this alone would kill the only-three-week-old iPhone. I hope that the Apple Store employees are only voiding warranties if both sensors are tripped, but I was not able to verify this either with Apple.

I realized something else when speaking to Amy about the iPhone and any Apple product with a water damage sensor: unlike on other cell phones, the moisture sensors are very accessible. On most cell phones, the sensors are located underneath a removable battery and enclosed by the cover that usually locked the battery into place. One would suspect that since those sensors were deep inside of the device, that they were better judges of whether or not you dropped the cell phone in a puddle.

In comparison, Apple's sensor (at the bottom of the iPhone) could easily be set off by sweat from your hands. You can see the sensor locations for a iPhone 3G in the photo above and a Nokia cell phone below for comparison.

Concerned about iPhone water damage? Previous iPhone Atlas articles show you how to check your iPhone for water damage and what to do about saving it. Apple even has a knowledge base article about it titled: iPhone and iPod: Water damage is not covered by warranty.

Or, for a very easy solution, make sure to use a good case (like the iSkin Revo2) that covers both the headphone jack and the docking/sync connector. This type of case isn't completely waterproof, but it might help protect the sensor on the bottom of the iPhone 3G--it has so far for me.

Finally, some news: Microsoft Extends Warranty For ‘E74′ Failures

April 14, 2009Finally, some news: Microsoft Extends Warranty For ‘E74′ Failures
Posted by The Ori

More troubles plague the Xbox360, and Microsoft! They make due though, as they usually do.

M$ Says: While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays “E74″ on their screen. After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007. We have already made improvements to the console that will reduce the likelihood of an occurrence of this issue.

Microsoft will refund to customers the amount paid for an out of warranty repair due to a general hardware failure associated with the e74 error message. Those customers should automatically receive the refund within 4-12 weeks, and no additional action by customers should be necessary. However, if a customer has not received a refund by July 1, 2009, the customer should visit www.xbox.com/support before November 1, 2009 for information on how to place a claim. All refund claims must be received on or before November 1, 2009.

What this means: The E74 error is now covered along side the 3LOD warranty; and is retroactive. That means, anyone who paid for their E74 repair while in their 3-Year 3LOD period, will be refunded.

Unlock Iphone Would Be Sold By AT&T (29/03/09)

AT&T has confirmed it will sell an unlocked version of Apple, Inc.'s iPhone 3G. But the unlocked iPhone will cost $599 to $699, and AT&T's voice and data plan will cost the same. So a two-year contract still might be the best value. The unlocked Apple iPhone 3G will work on AT&T and T-Mobile networks, but not Verizon or Sprint.

After all the controversy about unlocking Apple's iPhones, AT&T has made it moot by agreeing to sell iPhone 3Gs without a two-year contract. The company confirmed an Associated Press report that it will begin selling unlocked iPhones next Thursday for $599 and $699, depending on memory configuration.

Consumers can still purchase iPhone 3Gs for $199 and $299 with the two-year contract, or purchase a refurbished model for $149 from AT&T or Best Buy.

An unlocked iPhone has been on AT&T's agenda since at least July. When Apple released the iPhone 3G last summer, the wireless carrier said it would sell a contract-free iPhone in the U.S., but didn't give a date. The unlocked iPhone can be used on T-Mobile or AT&T networks, but it's not compatible with Verizon or Sprint networks.

A Stampede Is Unlikely

AT&T's announcement brings the iPhone into line with standard procedures for every other phone on the market, according to Avi Greengart, a wireless analyst at Current Analysis. AT&T has always been willing to sell the phones it offers unlocked without a contract if consumers ask and are willing to pay for it, he said, but the iPhone has been an exception.

"One of the reasons AT&T hadn't sold the iPhone unlocked is because there was a kickback to Apple for service revenues," Greengart said. "The ability to get an unlocked phone is less of a threat to Apple's goal of getting carrier distribution in multiple markets with the second-generation iPhone. Consumers can buy iPhones from local carriers in Europe and parts of Asia."

Despite the availability of an unlocked iPhone, analysts don't expect a rush on AT&T. That's because, for most people, there's no need for an unlocked iPhone. For consumers who intend to use the iPhone in the U.S., it makes better financial sense to allow AT&T to subsidize the purchase and save $400 with the two-year contract, Greengart said. The cost of the voice and data plan are the same regardless of the price of the phone.

Unsanctioned Applications

But for some consumers an unlocked iPhone is welcome news. For travelers who commute between Europe and the U.S., an unlocked phone makes the wireless experience more seamless between networks. Members of the military who move around frequently and don't want to sign a two-year contract might also find investing in an unlocked iPhone a smart idea.

Unlocked iPhones may also be attractive to people who want to install applications on the iPhone that Apple has not sanctioned. Renegade stores are launching to sell unauthorized applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. The Cydia Store is selling applications not available on Apple's sanctioned store, and another company plans to sell adult games for the iPhone.

Until now, consumers had to jailbreak their iPhones -- modify them so they can install and use unauthorized apps. A third party called Rock Your Phone helps users who haven't modified their iPhones.

Analysts caution, however, that manually unlocking the iPhone voids the warranty.

Hack Ur Iphone/Itouch

Before you all start thinking I'm going crazy and say mean things like “He’s Nuts!” and “Hasn’t this been posted before?”, let me explain; please.

I recently (and foolishly) upgraded to 1.1.2 on my iPod touch because I wanted to see the non-existent new features it brought. Yes, it gave me the much desired calendar “Add” button and yes, it gave me the useless battery indicator in iTunes, but I already had the Calendar button and had no need for the battery indicator, so I set on my mission to downgrade back to 1.1.1.

I read on some sites that the process was hard to do, with having to download an extra application or input a secret button sequence into the iPod. However this was not the case. After getting my copy of 1.1.1 from Apple’s site, all that was left was to Option + Click on the update button in iTunes, and navigate to the downloaded zip file. This process leaves all personal data and music on the iPhone or iPod Touch, but allows you to downgrade easily and safely.

After the downgrade was complete (which is exactly the same process as an upgrade) I set about re-hacking my shiny little Touch. The hacking process on the older firmware is ridiculously easy. Simply point Safari to jailbreakme.com and click install. This will JailBreak your iPod or iPhone, install the Installer.app and also patch the TIFF exploit, so you get the same security as in 1.1.2. After the installation completed I set about looking for the iPhone apps. I installed the BSD Subsystem and Community Sources from Installer.app and then added http://repo.us.to to the sources manually. This then allowed me to install the iPhone apps from the list of packages.

There are also literally hundreds of community developed apps including games, chat apps, and the AnySim unlock app for the iPhone to allow it to be used on any network. That’s it, happy hacking! (Please Note: Hacking of devices is at your own risk. The above tutorial is simply for educational purposes only).
